PCMIA: Stewards of the Future

Awards & Scholarships

The PCMIA Awards Committee solicits nominations for various awards and selects based on merit and criteria for said award. All are welcome to apply. We do our best to select the best of all applicants.

Donald S. Kingery Memorial

This award was established in 1974 by the friends of Donald S. Kingery. From 1975 to 1986, the award was conferred by the Donald S. Kingery Memorial, Inc. Beginning in l987, the PCMIA assumed sponsorship of this award program. The Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America (PCMIA) annually recognizes an individual who has significantly contributed to the furtherance and improvement of mine safety and health.

Nominations may be made for persons involved in any type of mining and are not limited to the coal industry where Mr. Kingery made his principal contributions. The award consists of an inscribed commemorative clock that is presented at the annual luncheon of the PCMIA which is normally held in late October.

Donald S. Kingery Student Scholarship

Beginning in 1976, scholarship awards were given by the Donald S. Kingery Memorial, Inc., and each scholarship recipient received $500. In 1986, the Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America (PCMIA) assumed sponsorship of this award program. Scholarship recognition increased to $1,000 in 1986, and up to $2,000 for each recipient beginning in 1987.

The scholarship check and certificate are presented at the annual luncheon of the PCMIA which is normally held in late October. The PCMIA Awards Committee annually solicits nominations from ABET accredited mining engineering school department chairs or other important points-of-contact typically in mid-August of each year.

Stephen McCann Memorial Educational Excellence Award

This award was established by the Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America (PCMIA) in 1986 and was designated as the Educational Excellence Award. However, with the passing away of Stephen McCann, who dedicated his life to the students in the field

of mining, in 1991 this award was renamed the Stephen McCann Memorial Educational Excellence Award. The award consists of an inscribed commemorative clock that is presented at the annual luncheon of the PCMIA which is normally held in late October.

Student Senior Design Project Award

The PCMIA has established a competition for the best senior design project. All mining schools have the requirement that graduating seniors complete a capstone design project to demonstrate their knowledge of engineering fundamentals and analysis of a problem. Competition for the PCMIA award is open to all mining schools in the United States. Nominees are selected by the mining faculty at the institution and up to two students per university can be nominated at the discretion of the faculty.

The projects are submitted for judging after review and grading by the faculty. The purpose of the award is to serve as a tangible stimulus for excellence and reward for outstanding effort in the preparation of the senior design project. The first prize is $1,000. Consideration is given to recognition of other submissions and a second and third place may be given at the discretion of the evaluation committee. The award is now a joint award between the PCMIA and the Pittsburgh Section of SME.
